The British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) was formed in 1923 with an initial 197 this has increased some what in 2006 the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) had 17,691 with a toal of 18,962 horses. There are 2 types of member to the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) Riders (These are the people who compete the horses in showjumping competitions) & Owners (These are the people who legaly own the horse) for a horse to compete affiliated under British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) rules both owner and rider as well the horse must be registerd with the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA).
The British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) is the governing body for both horses and ponies are responsible for all rules and regulations involved in the sport of showjumping in Great Britain at every levels of the. Affiliated shows that are run under the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) have classes to cater for all levels from 90cm for people who compete occasionaly upto 1.60m classes at some of the most prestiges show centers in the world (Horse of the Year Show - NEC, British Show Jumping Champiounships - NEC, Royal International Horse Show - Hickstead, olympia and may other prestigeous show including many shows that are held on the British county show circuit). In 2006 the were 4,070 affiliated shows held throughot Great Britain with 426,802 starters in showjumping competitions.

There are also specialised classes and finals throughout the year (Ken Beeston, 4 year old classes, 5 year old classes, 6 year old classes, 7 year old classes to name but a few)
After these novice competitions the fences begin to get higher and wider for more experienced combinations and as a result there is a more varied with classes such as Puisonces, Power and speed, Six Bars etc. the prize money also increases as you compete at a higher level..
Horses registered with the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) are graded with thier winnings and as a horse or pony win more money there choice of class becomes more limited.
There are 3 grades of horse or pony in the British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) as follows:-
